Diamonds and estate jewelry exceed pre-sale estimates at Bonhams California Jewels sale

(LOS ANGELES) – Bonhams presented California Jewels on May 14 which included a spectacular collection of jewels from heritage Maisons including Boucheron, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Harry Winston, Cartier, and Tiffany & Co., with designs showcasing exceptional diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds.

The 397-lot sale made a total of $1,754,104 with 79% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.

Emily Waterfall, Director of Bonhams Jewelry Department, in Los Angeles, commented: “California Jewels included some extraordinary jewelry with exceptional stones and exquisite craftsmanship from the most illustrious Maisons presenting designs that are both wearable and highly sought-after pieces of jewelry in today’s market. We were honored to sell jewels from the private estates of Therese Walsh and American magazine writer Judith Krantz, in addition to the Gould & Brettauer collection, all of whom had exceptional style and taste. Competition was fierce on the top lots with bidding by international buyers, achieving figures above the pre-sale estimates.”

Leading the sale was an 18k gold and diamond ring, highlighting a round brilliant diamond weighing 8.64 carats in a belcher mounting. The ring sold for more than its pre-sale estimate to achieve $89,400.

Another notable lot were a set of Cartier platinum, ruby, sapphire, and diamond line bracelets from the estate of Therese Walsh of Seattle, Washington who possessed impeccable style and elegance. The bracelets feature one alternating sections of square step-cut rubies weighing approximately 4.40 carats and round diamonds weighing approximately 1.95 carats, the other alternating sections of square step-cut sapphires and round diamonds of similar weights. The bracelets sold for more than five times its pre-sale estimate to achieve $28,160.

Other notable lots included:

  • A set of Van Cleef & Arpels platinum and diamond clip brooches, circa 1935. Both of geometric design set across with round, single-cut, French-cut, and baguette diamonds weighing 12.15 carats. The brooch sold for more than its pre-sale estimate to achieve $35,840.

Cartier platinum, ruby, sapphire, and diamond line bracelets, sold for $28,160.
  • A platinum, emerald, diamond and enamel pin, circa 1920. The geometric design features a central rectangular step-cut diamond weighing approximately 1.30 carats accented by round and square-cut diamonds weighing approximately 10.25 carats, finished with round cabochon emeralds and two round emerald beads, lined with black enamel. The pin sold for more than its pre-sale estimate to achieve $32,000.
  • A pair of Van Cleef & Arpels cultured pearl and diamond earclips from the estate of Judith Krantz (1928-2019) an American magazine writer, fashion editor and novelist. The earrings sold for double its pre-sale estimate to achieve $25,600.

  • A pair of platinum and diamond stud earrings from the estate of Therese Walsh of Seattle, Washington, featuring round brilliant diamonds, each weighing 2.00 carats. The earrings sold for double its pre-sale estimate to achieve $24,320.
