The Complexities of Appraising Antique & Period Jewelry

The program opens with Antique Diamond Cuts in Contemporary Appraisal Practice: Mistakes and Misclassification, presented by Celine Rose David, FGA. This session examines how applying modern cut standards to antique diamonds can lead to misidentification, distorted valuations, and compromised appraisal integrity. Emphasis is placed on understanding antique cuts within their historical, technological, and aesthetic contexts to support defensible professional practice.

Additional presentations include Jewelry – Back to Front by Duncan Parker, FGA, which explores how factors such as maker attribution, country of origin, condition, provenance, documentation, and alterations can significantly influence value. 

In When the Little Things Mean a Lot: The Effects of Minor Details on Value, Jessie English, GIA GG, highlights how subtle elements—such as construction techniques, functional components, material choices, and small design details—can have an outsized impact on the value of vintage and antique jewelry.

The webinar concludes with Coins Transformed: Art, Identity and Sentiments by Gail Brett Levine, GIA GG. This talk traces the history of engraved coins, from their use as Civil War-era identification to their popularity as jewelry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, now commonly known as love tokens.
