Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Erotic 38mm

NIVADA GRENCHEN ANTARCTIC EROTIC 38mmReading Time: 6 minutes
Key takeaways

• Nivada Grenchen has launched the Antarctic Erotic 38mm, featuring a discreet animated penguin caseback mechanism driven by the watch’s winding action.

• The project combines horological tradition with modern conservation, as a portion of the project budget is dedicated to supporting penguin protection in Antarctica.

• The watch is available for a time-limited pre-order starting April 30th, with pricing from $1,569 and varying order windows based on the dial version.

Built on the classic Antarctic 38mm, the Antarctic Erotic introduces two key updates: a new set of dial executions, and a playful animated caseback revealed while winding, a discreet “after-hours” Easter egg reserved for the owner—a serious daily watch with a mischievous secret.

Beyond the wink, this project also supports real penguin conservation efforts, a natural extension of the Antarctic story.

Campaign & Reveal

The launch was preceded by three weeks of teaser videos, culminating in a final reveal film featuring Guillaume in an Antarctic storm. Lost in the whiteout, he discovers an igloo turned into a penguin club, and the moment he shows the Antarctic found in the snow, the “family” instantly recognizes him as one of theirs.

The tone is light, but the complication and the commitment are real: a portion of the project budget supports penguin protection in Antarctica.

The “Erotic” Code: Watchmaking Tradition, Nivada’s Way

Erotic watches are part of a long-standing watchmaking tradition: hidden scenes, automata, and cheeky details designed to be discovered rather than displayed. With the Antarctic Erotic, Nivada Grenchen embraces that heritage through a see-through caseback and a subtle animation brought to life as it winds, a discreet wink with just enough irreverence to feel the real Nivada Grenchen vibe.

Heritage & Purpose

The Antarctic name is rooted in the polar exploration era that shaped the model in the 1950s. Introduced in 1954, the Antarctic was the first watch to reach Antarctica and was tested during the U.S. Navy’s Operation Deep Freeze missions in 1955–1956. Penguins, highly prevalent in expedition imagery, became a natural symbol of that world and appeared on the casebacks of several vintage Nivada models before being carried through to recent Antarctic reissues. With the Antarctic Erotic, Nivada Grenchen gives that historic emblem a new playful twist while adding a real-world conservation dimension.

The Complication: Designed by “Dr. Coldwater”

The animated caseback mechanism was conceived and engineered by Dr. Coldwater, a codename that hides a highly respected independent watchmaker.

To tell the story, Nivada Grenchen introduces an interview series with an “anonymous penguin”: partially blurred, as if he insisted on remaining unrecognizable, he walks viewers through the idea, the engineering constraints, and the final execution, without ever breaking the project’s tone.

Key idea: the animation is driven by the most natural interaction with a mechanical watch, winding, and remains a private discovery, visible only when you flip the watch over.

Movement

At the heart of the watch: a modified hand-wound Soprod P054, adapted to drive the animated caseback mechanism while preserving daily-wear reliability and a clean display on the front.

The miniature automaton is connected to the winding system. The ratchet wheel has been remachined into a cam profile, converting the winding action into a vertical motion that drives the penguin.

The Story Behind the Stone: Metal Mashup

Reading Time: 6 minutes I have to confess I just learned about electrum when this topic crawled up on my radar. We love the wide range of jewelry metals today that give consumers tremendous options for creating the exact piece of their dreams. Metal alloys are some of the more exciting variations for imaginative jewelry designers to work with. These options better reflect the tastes of a client and help them to personalize their jewelry, making it truly unique to them. Brooch with a griffin, from the necropolis of Kameiros, Rhodes, c.  625–600 BC (Louvre). Natural Alloy One topic catching my eye at the moment is a rare and naturally occurring metal alloy – electrum. This word, electrum may be uncommon to modern society, but it’s a Latin word derived from the Greek electron mentioned in the Odyssey referring to a metallic substance consisting of gold alloyed with silver. Electrum was usually called white gold in antiquity. But more accurately it was described as pale gold since ...
