(GABORONE, BOTSWANA / LIGHTHOUSE POINT, FLORIDA) – Sometimes, the most meaningful changes begin with a simple conversation.
When Ada Thela, founder and CEO of Zoe Diamonds, sent a message to Sean Dunn of J.R. Dunn Jewelers on LinkedIn, she wasn’t simply introducing her company. She was sharing a vision for what Botswana’s diamond story could become.

At just 32 years old, Thela believed Botswana could do more than mine diamonds. She believed Botswana could cut, polish, export, and tell the story of its diamonds through the talents of its own people. More importantly, she believed Botswana’s future would be shaped not only by its natural resources, but by the people empowered to build upon them.

Ada Thela, founder and CEO of Zoe Diamonds
“I am a product of Botswana’s diamond story. The opportunities I received through education and development programs funded by our diamond industry shaped my future. Zoe Diamonds is my way of helping ensure that future generations benefit from those same opportunities.”
What followed was not simply a business transaction, but a collaboration.
Over the months that followed, Thela and Dunn worked together to navigate the complexities of sourcing rough through Okavango Diamond Company, understand supply chain requirements, coordinate production, and overcome unexpected challenges. The process required patience, persistence, trust, and a willingness to learn from one another.

The result was the export of fully polished, Botswana-cut natural diamonds directly to the United States.
The first parcel, shipped in December 2025, included 2 polished diamonds totaling 2.91 tcw, each sourced through Okavango Diamond Company, cut and polished in Gaborone, and exported directly to the U.S. Before a single stone was cut, Dunn agreed to co-purchase rough through Botswana’s state-owned sales channel, believing in both the vision and the person behind it.

Sean Dunn, president of J.R. Dunn Jewelers
“I am part of a generation that was educated and inspired by Botswana’s diamond story,” said Thela. “Now we are building the next chapter – where the skills, the jobs, and the value stay here at home.”
Today, Zoe Diamonds employs 8 Motswana professionals and artisans in Gaborone.
“When people think about Botswana diamonds, I want them to think not only about where the diamonds come from, but about the people behind them. We have the talent, the skills, and the determination to create value here at home.”
Each diamond is blockchain-tracked from mine to GIA certification, transforming transparency into full traceability and giving buyers a verifiable connection to Botswana’s craftsmanship, talent, and story.
“There were no guarantees. I didn’t know how the polished would look. But if we want a different kind of diamond industry, somebody must go first,” said Dunn. “So, I did.”
“What impressed me most about Ada was her conviction. She wasn’t asking for a favor or looking for a shortcut. She had a clear vision for what she wanted to build and the determination to make it happen.”

The impact of the partnership is already extending beyond the supply chain. Inspired by two diamonds cut from the same Botswana rough crystal, Dunn has begun exploring a design concept called TWO FROM ONE – a ring featuring two diamonds (a round brilliant, 2.51 carats; an oval, .40 carats) born from a single crystal, symbolizing shared origin, individual growth, and lasting connection. In many ways, the concept mirrors the story behind the partnership itself: a shared beginning, transformed through trust, craftsmanship, and a belief in what is possible.
The symbolism extends beyond the jewelry itself. Much like the diamonds, the partnership between Thela and Dunn began from a shared idea and evolved into something neither could have created alone.

This milestone represents more than the export of polished diamonds. It demonstrates what beneficiation can look like in practice, creating opportunities for local talent, retaining more value in-country, and connecting consumers more directly to the people behind the product.
What began as a conversation between a retailer in Florida and a young entrepreneur in Botswana became a powerful example of what can happen when people choose collaboration over convention.
It is a story of trust.
A story of persistence.
A story of partnership.
And ultimately, a story about what is possible when Botswana’s people are allowed to shine.
And to think, it all started with a message on LinkedIn.
