Key Takeaways:
• Gemological Science International (GSI) successfully used its Missing Item Registry to help law enforcement recover a stolen $22,000 engagement ring in Oregon and identify missing lab-grown jewelry at an online auction.
• The GSI registry functions as a proactive asset for retail loss recovery by triggering automatic alerts when flagged items re-enter trade channels through secondary markets or appraisals.
• GSI provides critical investigative support to owners and law enforcement, including documentation and laser inscription records, to facilitate the return of jewelry to its lawful owners.
(NEW YORK) – Gemological Science International (GSI), one of the world’s largest gemological organizations, announced that its system successfully triggered GSI Missing Item Registry alerts in two separate cases during March 2026, resulting in law enforcement engagement in both instances and the confirmed recovery of a stolen engagement ring in Oregon.
In the first case, a $22,000 engagement ring, purchased with an accompanying GSI grading report from a regional jewelry retail chain in Oregon, was believed to have been stolen during a residential move. Following the theft, the owners had logged the GSI grading report into the GSI Lost & Stolen Jewelry Registry. When a third party subsequently accessed the associated GSI report, the system triggered an automatic alert.

GSI’s consumer services team consequently contacted the owners, advising them to notify the police. GSI provided the ring’s owners with full documentation support to the investigation, including GSI records and the GSI laser inscription number on the center diamond of the jewelry piece. The ring was ultimately recovered in Salem, Oregon, approximately 40 miles from where it disappeared, and returned to the owners.
In the second case, also in March, a prominent online auction marketplace contacted GSI, requesting a report on two lab-grown diamond jewelry items. GSI’s system identified both items as previously reported missing from one of the stores of a major US jewelry retail chain and triggered an automatic alert. The GSI customer service team immediately contacted the company’s loss prevention department, which in turn contacted law enforcement. The police requested relevant information, and GSI provided both the jewelry information and the relevant contact details.
These cases illustrate how GSI’s documentation and registry infrastructure can serve as an active asset in retail loss recovery, flagging items as they surface and re-enter trade channels through appraisers, resellers, or secondary-market inquiries.
“We are proud and happy to help reunite the jewelry with its lawful owners. We continue to build and improve GSI’s systems and innovate every day to serve the jewelry industry and its customers even better,” said Debbie Azar, GSDI President and Co-Founder.
