EP 112_Designing Stories: Mark Loren’s Award-Winning Journey in Custom Jewelry

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In this inspiring episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Podcast, hosts Guy Pineda and Elesa Dillon sit down with Mark Loren, the visionary founder of Mark Loren Designs in Fort Myers, Florida. With more than four decades in the jewelry industry, Mark shares how a passion discovered at a watchmaker’s bench evolved into an award-winning career built on artistry, innovation, and meaningful client relationships.

Mark reflects on his journey from Chicago to Florida, where he transformed a trade shop into a thriving custom jewelry design gallery recognized with more than a dozen Spectrum Awards. Throughout the conversation, he reveals how inspiration can come from everyday life, from architecture and chandeliers to nature, and how embracing technologies like CAD, laser welding, and engraving has elevated both creativity and craftsmanship without losing the timeless traditions of jewelry making.

Beyond beautiful designs, Mark emphasizes the true value of storytelling in jewelry. He explains how listening deeply to clients allows him to create one-of-a-kind heirlooms that celebrate personal memories, family legacies, and life’s most meaningful milestones. He also shares practical business wisdom for fellow jewelers, including building customer loyalty through exceptional service, community involvement, charitable partnerships, personalized experiences, and networking through organizations like RJO (Retail Jewelers Organization).

Whether you’re a jewelry professional, designer, retailer, or someone who appreciates the emotional power behind fine jewelry, this episode is filled with actionable insights, heartfelt stories, and timeless business lessons. Mark’s passion for mentoring others and helping independent jewelers succeed shines through every conversation.

I just got home from the Atlanta Jewelry Show, and thought I’d share some thoughts and discoveries with everyone from the show. Here’s what you missed if you haven’t been to a trade show in a while. First and foremost… They are fun! The really cool thing about a trade show is the interaction with your longtime friends and business associates. I’ve got friends in this business that I’ve known for 43 years. Many of those friends I’ve only seen face-to-face 43 times – always at a trade show . A jewelry trade show is a hands-on experience. Most days I’m at the point that I don’t want to look at another piece of jewelry on a phone or computer screen. I don’t care how many pics you take, and how many angles you shoot it from, you never really capture the essence of the piece. Being real jewelers , we know the only way to evaluate, and assess, a piece’s true quality and workmanship is to hold it in our hands. A jewelry trade show is a full blown, hands-on, experience. We’ve all bought jew...
