In many century-plus family businesses, the longstanding store name remains the same. Still, the store owners’ names change for a variety of reasons – most of them disruptive to direct family bloodlines. But that’s not the case for Logan, Utah-based S. E. Needham Jewelers.
Sylvan Eugene Needham, Sr., started the family business in 1896. Astonishingly, 130 years later, S. E. Needham V carries on the same name, the same bloodline, and the same family jewelry store traditions started by his great-great-grandfather.

There is a certain degree of truth regarding the phrase “from destruction comes creation.” S. E. Needham Jewelers started as Johnson Jewelry. Store owner Mr. Johnson was married to Lulu Holt Johnson (Needham).
One day in the late 1890s, Mr. Johnson made a trip to St. Louis, Missouri. He never came back. Lulu later received a letter from him stating he was not returning to Logan, Utah. Much to her credit, Lulu kept the jewelry store going.
“During this period in history, it was almost unheard of that a woman would own and manage a business by herself,” says Sylvan Eugene Needham V, the store’s current owner. “She ran the store for five years by herself. Then she met Sylvan Eugene Needham, Sr. They married, he joined the business, and Lulu renamed the store in 1901.”

The formative and early years of S. E. Needham were similar to those of other jewelers of the time, who were just as much a destination for optometry and watch repairs as for jewelry. As the couple navigated the start of the 20th Century, the retail essentials of the day helped Sylvan and Lulu successfully weather the birth of Sylvan Eugene Needham, Jr., in 1910.
Then, national and global events happened, namely World War I and the Great Depression. During the early decades of the 20th Century, the family store became more focused on watches, watchmaking, and jewelry.
In 1935, he took over management of the family business as America emerged from the Great Depression and entered World War II. He managed the family store during massive cultural, economic, and social changes in the US during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1967, Sylvan Jr. died, giving the business to Sylvan Eugene Needham III.
His mission as the leader of the family business was to preserve historic downtown Logan and the family store. Sylvan Eugene III was the consummate businessman in the family history. He not only owned and managed a jewelry store but also owned eight other retail stores in town. But his greatest contribution was putting an end to renting small stores around 1,200 square feet and owning a store boasting several thousand square feet in 1969.
With the past preserved, it was time to look ahead. His son, Sylvan Eugene IV (Gene), was determined to modernize the family business and ready it for the future. In 1990, Gene was given the keys to the family store and took over its management. He saw the value of industry-related certifications in diamonds and diamond grading from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Appraisal writing services were added to the store’s offerings along with diamond and jewelry grading. Gene also took the family business in new directions, expanding and upgrading the store’s jewelry offerings as bridal jewelry became a more significant retail cornerstone of sales growth and market expansion.
“Having a long history in this industry, especially in a traditional city like Logan, can be a challenge,” says Sylvan Needham V. “Being true to your history and traditions forces you not to be old and stodgy, but more importantly, old and classic while appealing to modern tastes, trends, and services.”
Gene’s wife Julie joined the family business. She found her niche in writing advertising copy, organizing the repair department and its systems, and, more recently, in social media and marketing. Joseph, Gene’s brother, is a trained jewelry designer and goldsmith. He’s the store’s head goldsmith (S. E. Needham’s has two locations, one in Logan and the other in Brigham).
The dynamic trio continued to hone the family business with a major renovation in 1995 that not only expanded the store’s space to 6,000 square feet in its third and current location in Logan, but also ushered in a new look for the 21st Century. Even the store’s corporate colors got a makeover.

But Gene also modernized the way the store brought in customers. “He [Gene] recognized that the jewelry industry was changing rapidly,” says Sylvan Eugene V. “He embraced marketing in a way previous generations had not. During the 1990s, radio, billboards, newspaper advertising, and direct mail were powerful tools for building brand awareness. My father became a recognizable voice on local radio. He invested heavily in advertising and developed marketing campaigns that helped distinguish our store from competitors.”
Gene modernized the family business for the next century. Still, Sylvan Eugene V enjoys having fun with the fact that his father Gene revolutionized the family store, but “doesn’t even have a computer on his desk.” That’s where the current generation comes in.
Born in 1995, Sylvan Eugene V became the store’s fifth-generation jeweler. In time, he would continue modernizing the store with his father’s help while embracing the existing and emerging technologies of jewelry retail, chief among them point-of-sale systems from The Edge.
“My favorite day of the year is the eight-hour seminar The Edge offers at the Las Vegas Show,” says Sylvan Eugene V. “I’ve learned so much about this amazing POS retail system.” But his tech interests don’t stop with The Edge. Sylvan Eugene V, along with other family members, staff, and local business owners, created a podcast called the Community Gem.
Still in its infancy, the podcast recognizes locals who make the Logan community a better place, because “Logan is truly a great place to live,” as he’s fond of saying. Sylvan Eugene V also enjoys creating content for the store’s newsletter. New recipients receive a $50 gift card.
His love of Logan and Utah’s mountain ranges, which give Logan its valley charm, has been extended to bringing in the Logan Fine Art Gallery into the store. “Today, fine art occupies much of what was formerly our gift department,” says Sylvan Eugene V.

Although celebrating the store’s 130th birthday is cause for major celebrations this year, for Sylvan Eugene V and his wife, the birth of their daughter Victoria in 2024 kind of eclipses a milestone anniversary. Victoria has many family members ready to pave the way for the next generation and perhaps, eventually, the next century.
“The longevity of S. E. Needham Jewelers has been due not only to family leadership, but also to attracting, training, and developing outstanding employees and managers throughout its history,” says Sylvan Eugene V. “Ultimately, our goal is the same as it has been for 130 years: leave the business stronger than we found it and continue serving the community that has supported our family for generations.”
